Oaxaca is a UNESCO World Heritage site in east-central Mexico. UNESCO regards it as a good example of Spanish colonial town planning, being laid out in a grid. UNESCO does not comment on the fate of the Zapotecs who inhabited the valley when the Spanish arrived in 1529. Nearby Monte Alban and Mitla, also UNESCO World Heritage sites, were extensive Zapotec towns that flourished for centuries.
